Celebrated every year on March 22nd, World Water Day is a holiday that is designed to bring attention to the importance of freshwater and to educate the public of the need for the adequate management of water resources all over the globe. As can be gathered from its name, this holiday is observed all over the world.
History of World Water Day
World Water Day was formally proposed in 1992 in Agenda 21 and submitted to the United Nation’s Conference on Environment and Development. The following year, in 1993, the first World Water Day was officially observed.
World Water Day Customs & Celebrations
Every year, a new theme is chosen for this day. For example, in 2003, the theme was “Water for the Future.” In 2010, it was “Clean Water for a Healthy World,” and in 2016, the theme was “Water and Jobs.” The theme each year helps the agencies involved with this day focus their attention on one important aspect of the world’s water systems.
On this day, events are held all over the world to raise money for WASH facilities in developing countries. WASH stands for water, sanitation and hygiene. World Water Day is a good day for people to organize and raise money for these WASH programs all over the world.
Another way to observe World Water Day is to try to not waste water. This can be done by sticking a brick in the back of your toilet – which will result in less water being used to flush it. People can also save water by turning off the faucet while they are brushing their teeth.
Nowadays, World Water Day is also used to commemorate the people who work in the water industry. Worldwide, there are over 1.5 billion working in water-related sectors. That’s half of all of the workers in the world.
